The Berlin Wall was built to prevent escape from East Berlin and the Democratic Republic of Germany, in 1961. 28 years later it was opened. There are only three segments of the wall left in Berlin of today. One segemnt, over 1 km long, is near the Warschau Strasse underground station. Artist have painted nearly all of this wall segment. These paintings have a great historical value. They have suffered from year of rain and wind. In 1996 about 15 of the artists took part in the restauration of these paintings.
